It has been very fun going to the 2026 optimist nationals in Hobart. I have been sailing in intermediate fleet at Fremantle sailing club for 2 1/2 terms and this was my first nationals. I was very nervous about taking part because I was not sure how good the other intermediate sailors would be and I have never been on a start line with that many boats, but I decided to take part for the experience (plus I wanted to go to Tasmania!).
My three main things that I have learned whilst taking part are:
1.How to hike to keep my boat flat in the wind.
2.How to read the conditions and set my sail properly.
3.That I can do it and I am good enough to do nationals. I finished 30th out of 42 boats!
What made me less nervous was having other people sailing in intermediate fleet who I knew from Fremantle Sailing Club so it was not completely unfamiliar. My best day was on the windiest days when I came 20th because I kept on sailing even though half the fleet had dropped out, and even though I was at the back I still finished in time. Taking part in nationals was so much fun and I am really pleased that I did it.
My advice to new national competitors or people thinking about taking part in nationals; Even if you don't feel ready, have a go, make sure you have fun and always try your best. I am looking forward to nationals in 2027 already.
